Download Exchange

How does Download Exchange BETA work?

Download Exchange BETA gives iPhone Application publishers the ability to exchange traffic from within their applications for advertising to drive downloads of their apps. Here’s how it works: as a participant in Download Exchange, Exchange ads promoting other participants’ apps will display in your app. In trade for showing these unpaid ads, ads promoting your app will be shown on other apps in the AdMob Network.

You have complete control over how much inventory is allocated towards Exchange ads. Publishers can configure Exchange ads only to be returned when a paid ad request is unfilled. This is a good way to maximize return on your inventory by recapturing value when a paid ad is unavailable. With Download Exchange set in this way, you can harness your existing inventory to drive downloads of your app without any opportunity cost.

Exchange participants can also elect to specify a percentage of requests to be allocated to Exchange ads. This allows you fine-tune the balance between direct monetization via paid ads and utilizing your inventory on increasing your user base through promotion in Download Exchange.

How do I get started?

To configure Download Exchange BETA, you will first need to have a valid App Store URL entered for your app. To learn how to edit your app, see Edit Your App or Site Settings.

Next, you’ll want to opt in to Download Exchange. Navigate to the “Sites & Apps” tab and click on the “Exchange: Not Configured” link under the name of your app. If we’re able to find your app in the App Store, you will be taken directly to the Exchange setup page.

Note: If an error message displays, please ensure you have entered the correct App Store URL for your application. Also, it can take up to 48 hours for our system to pick up newly released apps. If neither of these conditions fit your situation, please email support@admob.com with Download Exchange URL in the subject.

In the Download Exchange setup page, you can turn Exchange ads on or off and configure how much inventory you want to allocate. Setting the slider to “More paid ads” will only return Exchange ads if a paid ad is unavailable. This setup will not affect your revenue and puts your unfilled inventory to good use. The further this slider is moved towards the “More exchange ads” side, the more inventory will be to be filled with Exchange ads instead of paid ads.

Within this page, you can also create and edit your Exchange ads. AdMob automatically creates two ads for you based on your app’s information in the app store. However, we highly encourage users to edit and create new ads as ad text can greatly affect how well your Exchange ads drive downloads of your application.

The Targeting Details link displays how your Exchange ads are targeted. AdMob automatically targets your Exchange ads based on information from the Apple App Store. Users do not have control over this, however if your targeting appears to be incorrect please email support@admob.com and mention “Download Exchange Targeting” in the subject line.

How do I monitor Download Exchange BETA performance?

Reporting for Download Exchange is available in the “Sites & Apps Reporting” under the “Reporting” tab. In this section you can select “Download Exchange Report” in the “Ad Type” dropdown. This report will show you two metrics: Exchange Impressions and Exchange Downloads. The Exchange Impressions statistic displays the number of impressions that have been served in your application to promote other exchange participants’ apps. The Exchange Downloads statistic, shows the amount of downloads of your application that were driven by promoting it via Download Exchange.

What performance can I expect from Download Exchange?

Performance varies based on many factors including the click through rate of your app and the performance of your Download Exchange ads. Assuming your app performs at levels consistent with other applications, the ads for your app will be shown approximately the same number of times your ad shows ads for other apps.

Conversion rates for free apps are typically around 10%, but vary from 5-20% depending on the application. This means that for every 1,000 people who click on your advertisement, roughly 100 will install your app. Using an average click through rate of 1%, the below calculation shows that you might expect about 100 downloads for every 100,000 Exchange Impressions.

100,000 Exchange Impressions * 1% click through rate = 1,000 clicks
1,000 clicks * 10% conversion rate = 100 Exchange Downloads

Please remember that performance varies from app to app. We encourage to you test and experiment with Download Exchange to evaluate the value it provides to you.
